Your Seedlings Don't Need a $200 Grow Light. They Need It Six Inches Closer.
This is a September post about a January problem, and that is deliberate. The seed catalogs land after Christmas, everybody sets up a shelf in the first week of January, and by the time you are standing in a kitchen looking at a tray of pale wobbly stems in February it is too late to research anything. So: the shopping decision, four months early.
The advice you will get is to buy a full-spectrum grow light. Reviews will compare spectrum charts. Listings will quote wattage and lumens and a color temperature and something described as PAR. There will be lights that glow purple and cost real money.
Almost none of it matters for seedlings, and the thing that does matter is free.
The short answer
An ordinary LED shop light from a hardware store, hung two to six inches above the leaves and left on for fourteen to sixteen hours a day, will grow better seedlings than an expensive fixture hung two feet up. Distance is doing far more work than spectrum, brand or price, and it is the variable nearly everyone gets wrong.
If you already own a light and your seedlings are leggy, lower it before you buy anything.
Why distance beats everything
Light intensity falls off with the square of the distance. Move a fixture from six inches to twelve, and the seedlings underneath are not getting half as much light. They are getting a quarter. Go to two feet and you are at a sixteenth.
That is not a marginal effect, and it is why the same light produces stocky seedlings on one shelf and etiolated string on another. A tray sitting a foot below a decent fixture can be receiving less usable light than a tray sitting three inches under a cheap one.
Leggy seedlings are the plant responding rationally to this. A seedling that is not getting enough light invests everything it has in getting taller, on the reasonable theory that whatever is shading it can be climbed out from under. Long pale stem, small leaves, falls over. There is no nutrient deficiency and nothing wrong with your seed starting mix. The plant is reaching, and the fix is to remove the reason.
So hang the light on adjustable chains, and raise it as the seedlings grow to keep that gap roughly constant. That one piece of hardware, a pair of chains and hooks, does more for your February than an upgrade does.
What the box is and isn’t telling you
Lumens are a measurement weighted for human eyes, which are most sensitive to green light. Plants use comparatively little green. A lumen figure tells you how bright the light looks to you, which is close to useless here.
Wattage on cheap listings is frequently an “equivalent” number rather than what the fixture draws. Where it is honest it tells you about your electricity bill rather than about your plants.
“Full spectrum” is a marketing phrase without a fixed definition. Any decent white LED covers what seedlings need. The purple-looking fixtures, which use only red and blue diodes, are not wrong, but they are not better for this either, and they make it genuinely hard to see whether a leaf has gone yellow or a seedling has damped off. Being able to look at your plants is worth something.
PPFD is the number that would tell you something real, measured in micromoles per square meter per second at the height the leaves are. It is the count of usable photons landing on the plant. Seedlings do well somewhere in the region of 200 to 400. Most consumer listings either do not quote it, or quote it at a distance of two inches from the diodes, which no plant will ever occupy.
Which is a long way of saying that the specs are not much use, and the practical test is better: hold your hand where the leaves are. If it is comfortably bright, you are close. If the light looks distant, the plant agrees with you.
Where spending more does buy something
Coverage, mostly. A twenty-dollar shop light covers roughly one standard tray properly, and the edges of a second one badly. If you are starting six trays, buying six cheap fixtures gets awkward, and one good wide fixture with even output across a whole shelf is genuinely worth the money.
Build quality matters if it is going to live in a damp basement for a decade. And a fixture that can be dimmed is a real convenience later on, when the same shelf is holding pepper seedlings that want more light and lettuce that does not.
None of those are reasons a beginner needs to spend $200 in their first season, and every one of them is a reason to spend it in the fourth.
The actual myth is the windowsill
The thing worth arguing with is not which light to buy. It is the widespread belief that a bright south-facing window is enough.
In February, at most northern latitudes, it is not close. The sun is low, the days are short, glass cuts what gets through, and the light arrives from one side, which is why windowsill seedlings lean and why turning them every day produces a plant that leans in both directions. People do get away with it in March, in a very good window, with tolerant crops. In January, with tomatoes and peppers, it is how the pale wobbly stems happen.
If you are only going to buy one thing for seed starting, buy the light before you buy the heat mat, the fancy trays or the soil blocker.
The timing part, which is the other half
Half the leggy seedlings I have seen were not underlit so much as overgrown. Somebody started tomatoes in the second week of January, in a climate where transplanting happens in mid May, and asked a seedling to sit in a small cell under artificial light for eighteen weeks. Nothing survives that looking good.
Starting dates come from your own last frost, counted backward by the weeks each crop needs, and the answer is usually later than the enthusiasm of early January suggests.
