Crop Rotation Only Works If You Remember Last Year, and Almost Nobody Does
Ask anyone who grows vegetables whether they rotate their crops and you will get a yes. Ask them where the tomatoes were two summers ago and watch what happens to their face.
I include myself here. I have given people the rotation talk over a fence and then gone inside and put peppers in the bed the tomatoes came out of, because in April that bed was empty and had good sun and I could not have told you under oath what had been in it.
This is the thing nobody says about crop rotation: it is not a knowledge problem. Everyone understands the idea within thirty seconds of hearing it. It is a memory problem, and memory problems do not get solved by understanding the idea better.
The timing is what defeats it
The reason is structural, and once you see it the failure stops being embarrassing.
You do your planning in February. Seed order in front of you, graph paper or an app, the beds theoretical and clean in your head. And February is precisely the moment when you have the least possible evidence about what happened last year, because the beds have been bare since November, everything got pulled, and the difference between the bed that grew squash and the bed that grew beans is now zero.
Meanwhile the moment you have maximum evidence is right now. You can walk outside this afternoon and see it. That is a tomato cage. Those are bean poles. That stump is a brassica. The garden is currently a map of itself, and in six weeks it will not be, and in February you will be reconstructing it from a photograph you did not take.
So the fix has almost nothing to do with rotation theory and everything to do with when you write things down.
The second failure is families
The other half of it, and this one genuinely is a knowledge gap, is that people rotate crops rather than families. Rotation is about the things that live in the soil and specialize in a particular group of plants, and those things do not care what you call the vegetable.
Tomatoes to peppers is not a rotation. Both are nightshades, along with potatoes and eggplant, and the wilts that build up under one will meet the next quite happily. Potatoes catch people out constantly, because they feel like a root vegetable and file mentally next to carrots.
Radish and arugula are brassicas, filed mentally next to salad. Turnips too. If you have been carefully moving your cabbages around a four-bed rotation while sowing radishes wherever there was a gap, you have been undoing it.
The families worth knowing are shorter than the list of vegetables you grow: nightshades, brassicas, cucurbits, legumes, alliums, the carrot family, and the beet-and-chard family. Seven groups covers nearly everything in a home garden. Learn those once and the rule becomes usable.
What rotation buys you, honestly
I want to be careful here, because rotation gets talked about as though it were a law of nature and the evidence in a small home garden is softer than that.
Rotation works well against soil-borne pathogens that persist and that specialize: clubroot in brassicas, which sits in soil for years; white rot in onions and garlic, which sits there for very much longer than that; verticillium and fusarium wilts in the nightshades. Against those, moving the crop is one of the few tools a home gardener has, and it is worth real effort.
It works less well than people imagine against things that arrive on the wind or fly in every season. Late blight does not care about your rotation. Neither do cabbage moths, aphids, or squash vine borers, all of which will find the crop wherever you put it. Moving your squash eight feet is not a pest strategy.
And the honest caveat for small gardens: soil organisms travel on boots, on tools, in splashed water. In a field a rotation puts real distance between this year’s crop and last year’s inoculum. In four raised beds, “the other end of the garden” is twenty feet, and that is not the same protection. It is still worth doing. It is not the shield the books imply.
The nutrient argument is also thinner than it is usually made. Legumes do fix nitrogen, but a good deal of it ends up in the seed, so if you harvest and dry your beans you are exporting most of what was fixed. The benefit is real when you turn the plants in rather than when you eat them.
What is left after all that hedging is still a good reason to do it: a handful of genuinely destructive, genuinely persistent soil diseases, and a general tendency for a bed grown with the same thing every year to get tired in ways that are hard to name and easy to see.
Do it now, while the beds still say what happened
Walk out with something to write on and record what is in each bed before you clear it. Not a plan. A record. Which family was in which bed, and anything that went wrong: the end of the row that got blight, the corner where nothing came up, the bed the slugs treated as a restaurant.
That last part is worth as much as the rotation itself. In February you will remember that “the squash did badly” and you will not remember that it did badly only in the bed nearest the fence, which is the piece of information that would have told you something.
A photograph from the bedroom window with the plants still standing is a decent substitute if you are not going to write anything. Ten seconds, and it beats reconstructing it in the spring.
